You’re sitting in the dental chair, bib clipped around your neck, when the hygienist mentions it’s time for X-rays. Maybe you wonder why they’re necessary. Maybe you’re curious about what those shadowy images actually show. Or maybe you just want to get back to your day.
We get it. Dental X-rays can feel mysterious. But they’re one of our most valuable tools for protecting your smile. At our Timonium dental office, we believe you deserve to know what we’re looking at and why it matters. So let’s pull back the curtain.

Why We Take X-Rays in the First Place
Your teeth have secrets. What you can see is only a fraction of the story. Below the gumline and inside the tooth structure, problems can develop quietly for months or even years without any symptoms.
X-rays let us see what our eyes can’t. They reveal your tooth roots, the bone that supports them, and the spaces between teeth where cavities love to hide. Without them, we’d be guessing. With them, we can catch issues early when they’re easiest and least expensive to treat.
What Shows Up on a Dental X-Ray
Let’s walk through what we’re actually looking for when we review your images.
- Cavities and Decay: X-rays are the gold standard for finding cavities. They show decay as darker areas within the tooth. This is especially helpful for cavities between teeth, which are invisible to the naked eye. We can also see how deep a cavity goes. If it’s close to the pulp, we may need a root canal.
- Bone Loss and Gum Disease: The bone that holds your teeth in place can shrink over time, especially with gum disease. X-rays show us the height and density of that bone. If we see loss, we can recommend treatments to stop it from getting worse.
- Infections and Abscesses: An infection at the tip of a tooth root shows up clearly on an X-ray. Sometimes patients don’t know it’s there until we spot it. Catching an abscess early can save the tooth and prevent the infection from spreading.
- Impacted Teeth and Wisdom Teeth: X-rays reveal teeth that haven’t erupted properly, like wisdom teeth. We can see their position, angle, and whether they’re likely to cause problems. This helps us plan ahead and avoid surprises.
- Other Findings: Sometimes X-rays reveal things you wouldn’t expect. Cysts, tumors, and even signs of systemic health conditions can show up. That’s why we carefully review every image.
Types of X-Rays We Use
Not all X-rays are the same. Each type serves a specific purpose.
Bitewing X-rays show the crowns of your back teeth and are great for spotting cavities. Periapical X-rays show the entire tooth, from crown to root tip. A panoramic X-ray gives us a full view of your entire mouth, including your jaw joints and sinuses. We choose the type based on what we need to see.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe?
This is a fair question, and we hear it often. Dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation. The amount is far less than what you’d get from a chest X-ray or a cross-country flight.
We take safety seriously. We use lead aprons and thyroid collars to protect you. We also follow guidelines that limit X-rays to only what’s necessary for your care. If you’re pregnant, let us know. We’ll adjust our approach accordingly.

We know dental visits can feel rushed sometimes. But we never want you to leave with unanswered questions. If you’re curious about your X-rays, ask us. We’re happy to pull up your images and walk you through them.
